Homework and independent learning

Homework reinforces classroom learning, helping students retain and understand new material. It fosters independent study habits, encouraging self-discipline and time management. Additionally, homework provides opportunities for practice and application of skills, enhancing mastery. It also allows teachers to assess student comprehension and identify areas needing further attention and therefore is an integral part of our curriculum provision at all Key Stages.

All teaching departments will set students weekly homework for all subject areas. This can take many forms including on Seneca, Microsoft Teams and any other bespoke form. Alongside this, pupils in years 7,8,9 will be completing self-quizzing work on a weekly basis using their green self-quizzing exercise book and knowledge organiser; this is for all subjects and will be set on class-charts.

Self-quizzing, also known as self-testing or retrieval practice, is a learning strategy where individuals actively test their own knowledge on a particular subject or topic. Instead of simply reviewing notes or re-reading materials, self-quizzing involves actively recalling information from memory. This process helps reinforce learning and improve long-term retention.

The idea behind self-quizzing is based on the concept of retrieval practice, which suggests that actively recalling information from memory enhances learning and memory retention. When you engage in self-quizzing, you force your brain to retrieve information, strengthening the neural pathways associated with that knowledge.

It is a valuable study technique that can be used for various subjects and academic levels. Research has shown that incorporating self-quizzing into your study routine can lead to better understanding, improved retention of information, and enhanced performance on exams. At Q3 Academy Tipton, pupils will spend a minimum of 15 minutes each evening using their self-quizzing books and knowledge organisers to complete the homework set by their teacher.
